Can I be able to do a research on finding a cure for AIDS by majoring in biochemistry? How about Biology?

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Currently I’m a sophomore biochemistry student and I’m struggling my way through my courses. I already failed college algebra twice and beginners chemistry. I’m kind of doubting myself if I should go on with the Biochemistry major or switch to Biology.

But the things is that, like every science major I want to have knowledge about everything. About cells, chemicals and how I can put the two together to somehow make an antibiotic that can be resistant to the HIV virus and with a Biochemistry major I assume I might get more knowledge. Thus, it would be somewhat easier for me to understand things. An immigrant from Africa; this would be my dream gift for all my African brothers and sisters struggling with this disease.

The problem is that not only am I struggling through out my math and science courses but I have the fear of a committing on Biochemistry for 3 more years. Biochemistry have some hard classes…If I already failed beginners chemistry, I sure as hell am not ready for what is waiting for me in Organic Chem.

Should I switch my major to Biology(which is relevantly easier than Biochemistry), even though I would be handicapped of getting knowledge about chemicals?

Even though, I have supportive parents, counselors and brothers…i’m still doubtful & scared. =(
